MORE ABOUT THE MAP
Descendants of the Mackay Family have always known that the old “Indian Map” archived in the
Library of Congress was the map drawn by their ancestor, James Mackay.
It was in 2003 that historians, Thomas Danisi and Raymond Wood set out to find the real author
of the famous “Indian Map” used by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Through a great amount of
research and following paper trails they were indeed able to document that it was in fact the map
drawn by James Mackay from his notes together with the notes of his Lieutenant, John Evans. It
was through their efforts and hard work that the Library of Congress “Indian Map” is now known
as the MACKAY-EVANS MAP. The descendants of James Mackay owe a great tribute to these
two men.
